Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th December 2024 Outline

Haggai and Zechariah began to prophesy in Jerusalem in 520 B.C. They supported the civil and religious leaders, Zerubbabel and Jeshua, with their courageous preaching and constant encouragement (see the books of Haggai and Zechariah). Both the prophets and the people belong to God (v.1b). In response, Zerubbabel and Jeshua led the people to resume construction work on the temple. Immediately, the governing authorities questioned them: “Who has given you authority to rebuild the house and complete its furnishings” (v.3b)?

Whenever we want to do the work of God, we should be ready to suffer adversity and/or persecution. Our attitudes, the way we react to these situations and our trust in God will determine victory or defeat. The work continued despite the hostility because “the eye of their God was watching over the elders of the Jews” (v.5). Are we aware that God is always watching over us? So, why do we worry? Read Isaiah 43:13.

Practice/Word Application
Reflect: How many consider it pure joy when they face trials of any kind, especially opposition? Don’t we always want the obstacles removed? Apostle James tells us that the testing of our faith produces perseverance (James 1:2-4).

Closing Prayer
Father God, grant that our church and civic leaders may partner well to overcome challenges to progress and effect development in the nation.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 145:18 ‐ 19
18 The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. 19 He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.
